The Nature Ice Palace in the Hintertux Glacier is a worldwide unique natural jewel and an ideal year-round excursion destination for big and small adventurers. It was discovered by chance by Roman Erler in 2007. Mr. Erler immediately recognized the beauty of nature. After years of research, thousands of hours of work and a lot of heart and soul, today you can enjoy the adventure to the fullest without helmets or special equipment. In our guided tours we say "Please enter!" into the wonderful world in the heart of the glacier. Visitors explore walkable crevasses 30 meters below the ski slope with magical meter-long icicles, huge sparkling ice crystals, frozen waterfalls and even a glacial lake. It seems almost unimaginable to drive with a boat through the glacier. Above oneself a 30-meter-thick mass of ice and below up to twenty meters deep clear water. We are very happy that we could make a part of this glacier jewel accessible for visitors. Let yourself be enchanted and marvel at the beauty and purity of this natural wonder. However, the glacier shall keep one or the other secret for itself...

To get to the Nature Ice Palace, you go to a side valley of the Zillertal, the Tuxertal. When arrived in Hintertux at the cable car valley station you buy the tickets for the up & down ride to the "Gefrorenen Wand".

It then goes high up with the three cable cars ("Gletscherbus 1,2 and 3") up to 3,250 m with probably the most spectacular cable car in the Alps. It is also the highest two-cable ropeway in the world. It takes about 45 minutes to get from the bottom station to the top station "Gletscherbus 3". You overcome 1,750 meters of altitude with an unimaginable view of the surrounding mountains of the Zillertal Alps. When leaving the mountain station "Gletscherbus 3" you will see our container office directly on the left side. There you can buy the tickets for the Nature Ice Palace.

The entrance to the wonderful world of ice is about 200 m away from the container office. This way will be gone on foot in the course of our guided tour. The meeting point for the start of the guided tours, which take place every hour from 10:30 to 14:30, is always our container office next to the "Gletscherbus 3" mountain station. ! Attention: there is no toilet at 3250m. Please go to the toilet at one of the two intermediate stations (Sommerberg or Tuxer Ferner Haus) when going up.

TIP: If you have time before the tour, you can enjoy the view from the panoramic terrace. On clear days you can see all the way to the “Zugspitze” (highest mountain of Germany) and you have there a breathtaking distant view over the highest mountains in the area.

Visiting the Nature Ice Palace does not require much more in terms of equipment than a winter walk in the snow. At an altitude of 3,250 m there is snow all year round. We therefore recommend sturdy, ankle-high shoes with a good grip. You should also dress warmly enough, as the temperature in the Nature Ice Palace is constantly 0 degrees Celsius all year round. Gloves are advantageous, so even the cold iron ladders in the world of ice cannot trigger you.

Until you get to the entrance of the Natural Ice Palace on the tour, you must walk 200 meters through the snow. It goes half the distance also downhill. There can be temperatures deeply below zero and strong winds at the glacier (not in the Nature Ice Palace). Therefore, we ask the visitors to inform themselves beforehand about the weather conditions on the glacier and to dress accordingly.

Good to know:

• Sunglasses can be an advantage when leaving the Nature Ice Palace, as the eyes must get used to the brightness from outside. The snow can be a bit blinding when walking back from the ice cave to the mountain station "Gletscherbus 3".
• It is generally possible to walk around the Nature Ice Palace in ski or snowboard boots. In winter 80% of the visitors visit our world of ice with them. Nevertheless, we recommend that you bring a change of shoes, if possible, as the rigid ski or snowboard boots offer less room for movement.

The Nature Ice Palace is located at an altitude of about 3,220 m above sea level. It is much more exhausting to do everyday things at such an altitude. Our guides are concerned about your well-being. Accordingly, you should meet the following characteristics to be able to visit the Nature Ice Palace:

• be adventurous and inquisitive
• be physically fit
• be able to walk the 200 m long way to the entrance of the Nature Ice Palace and back on your own, half of the way is downhill (or uphill after the tour)
• be free of cardiovascular diseases
• be able to climb ladders (up to 3 m long)
• don`t be claustrophobic
• be 6 years old or be able to fulfill the above-mentioned points without the help of others.

Babies and toddlers are not allowed to join the tour in the Nature Ice Palace on the arm of a parent or in a baby carrier.

Apart from glacier fleas, no animals are allowed in our Nature Ice Palace for safety reasons. If it is a smaller, well-behaved dog, you can ask us in advance if it is possible for it to stay in our container office during the tour that day. As an alternative option, you could take part in the tour one after the other, so that the other stays with the four-legged friend.
